A CIRANO study on high users of the healthcare system highlighted in La Presse

A recent article by Francis Vailles published in La Presse highlights the findings of a CIRANO study by Maude Laberge (CIRANO Researcher), Bile Yacouba Djedou, Anaïs Lacasse, Catherine Hudon and Thomas G. Poder (CIRANO Researcher).

The study analyses the care pathways of high healthcare users using the TorSaDe cohort, a comprehensive database that tracks the care pathways of 100,000 Quebecers over a ten-year period.

The key finding is that a very small proportion of the population accounts for nearly half of healthcare expenditure. High healthcare utilisation results from complex interactions between medical vulnerabilities and the social determinants of health.

For the authors, these findings highlight the importance of better identifying at-risk profiles in order to facilitate early and targeted interventions, with a view to improving the efficiency of the healthcare system.
